The Pier

The Pier was
built in 1872 by Head Wrightson for £8,000 and opened on August
Bank Holiday 1873. A pier head concert hall was built in 1888
but was destroyed by fire in 1903. In 1906 a new pavilion was
built near the promenade and still remains today. The pier was
breached in 1940 for defence measures and to combat threat of
enemy invasion and an isolated seaward section was demolished
after the war, as the government could not afford to replace the
gap. Some of the salvaged material was used on
Leicester City Football Club's new stand. The pier now measures
335 feet compared to its original 1200 feet. The end used to
reach the water even in low tide because of its length. The pier
is celebrating its 127th birthday in 2000.
In 1985 the new
owner transformed the pavilion into a modern night club named
Pier 39 which held about 700 people, Thirteen years later
a £600,000 facelift added two new bars and a new dance floor
making it the largest night club in the area.
